I haven’t. First time I heard about it I thought it must be some esoteric discipline, maybe martial arts thing or at least something Asian?! But it’s not. Kizomba is one of the most popular genres of dance and music created in Angola. Primarily it’s a genre of music, generally sung in Portuguese, a romantic flow mixed with African rhythm. The music and singing is of course combined with a very special dancing. The kizomba dancing style is known to be a very sensual. It was supposed to be created in early 1990’s as a fusion of semba (predecessor of samba) and Zouk (I’ve heard about that one before… yeey). As my friend Google and his lady-friend Wikipedia say, it is danced with a partner, very smoothly and slowly. Apparently a rather high degree of knee flexibility is required?! 🙂 Here’s a sample:
Somehow I see it as a salsa-bachata-tango thing? Well, it sure looks interesting.
A friend from Belgrade is organizing first festival of kizomba on 10th – 11th of May 2008. It will be a first time for them as well 🙂 They invited a Portuguese instructor Benjamim Nande, who will give basic classes of Kizomba and LA salsa style.
Jasna Kovačevič, the organizer of this first Belgrade Kizomba&Salsa Weekend says she’s really excited to have Nande on the festival. “Nande has taught kizomba in various countries, from Portugal, Spain, Poland, USA, Brasil, … and is known to teach kizomba in such a specific way it is really easy to learn and love immediately. On our seminar he will give all the basics of kizomba and then progress to improving levels.”
