Probably one of the greatest international salsa instructors, Magna Gopal, will be visiting Slovenia in the month of October for the 6th Salsa Power Festival. Her graceful dancing and great methodology skills have so far enlightened so many people. It’s only fair to say I was one of those people, who felt a big break-through, while first seeing Magna dance, perform or even better – teach. She found a couple of free minutes to present herself to Slovenian audience, so enjoy these interview and get inspired by this magnificent Indian angel. 🙂
1. Magna, I know this is the most common question you get, but many people here might not know much about your background. Your origin seems to be Indian, yet you lived in Canada and now in the US of A? Is New York your final location or do you see yourself moving somewhere else – maybe back home?
Hi Irena. Yes it’s a common question. I was born in New Delhi, India and moved to Toronto, Canada with my family when I was 6 years old and finally moved to the USA 3 years ago. I actually live in NJ but close enough to NY to say NY…hehehe. NY is my current location but definitely not my final. I’m still exploring the world and you never know what part will steal my heart. As for moving back home to India (not likely) and back to Canada (it’s possible but really not in my plans).
2. You know, on previous festivals we already saw some instructors with Indian roots (like Neeraj, Mario etc.). I always thought Cubans are the ones who are born with the right feel for salsa, but you guys seem to master that even better. 🙂 How come?
I don’t think it always boils down to your ethnicity when it comes to “having the right feel for salsa.” There are many Latin Americans that have a feel for the music and moving but not necessarily for the dance itself. I think it’s part passion and understanding your body. I love the music and the dance and I was really determined to get it and luckily I have a good sense of rhythm so it all pieced together nicely.

They say it’s gonna be a hot weekend! First summerish weekend of the year. And speaking from the heart – one can feel that. The temperatures rose to almost 30°C in a couple of days, without any prior warning, so it takes time to adjust. And I guess this weekend will be even hotter than hot. Why? Cause there’s another festival on the way. A smaller version of Salsa Power festival – one day event with a few classes and top party called Salsa Flower Power.
Slovenia will, for the first time host Fadi Hamdan alias Fadi Fusion from Spain and Vedran Marčeta from BiH.
I met both guys last year and I know, they’re great instructors and dancers. I can’t wait to learn from them and see their show. For a little appetizer, check this show from Fadi,… I think his body isolations are phenomenal and musicality just wonderful. I really enjoy this type of shows, so people, please continue with this kind of work 🙂
And I’m more than happy to announce Buba’s social dancers will perform on the party as well. We had a little something to do with that. So go guys – enjoy on that stage 🙂
Location: Buba and Klub CD
Time: 1pm for workshops, 9pm for party
Dress code: Spring touch (or summer I guess) 🙂

14th of February.. ahhh… the red, the sweet, the mooshy… Paradise for gift stores… and great excuse to party 🙂 The “in-love Saturday” was celebrated in a completely new venue for salsa parties – Gospodarsko razstavišče. That is one huge place, where probably for the first time, noone could say it was too crowdy 😉 Buba gave us two floors, one with salsa rhytms and one in disco spirit. That is why some outsiders joined the party as well – which is a good thing of course!
As usual big salsa parties give us exciting show program and this one was no different. We saw 5 shows, which you can see in this short clip (shows are a bit cropped, since I had to squeeze them in 10 minutes only) 🙂
It was great seeing the disco-salsa performance on a salsa stage finally (great job guys – especially the newcomers to Buba Show Team); I’m happy to see kizomba slowly reaching Slovenia (though this was the first time I saw it done coupleless); Donia and girls from Croatia – hats down (boy were you synchronized); La Luna is getting better and better with each show they make and those sexy oriental dancers… uh,.. hot’n’spicy.. as always 🙂
And a big thank you to Tjaša for the clips. Great angle 🙂
Salsa Power edition will continue with party spirit in Spring, when Salsa Flower Party shall take place. But we’ll write about that some other time. 🙂
Now go put on a costume and go party!! We have to chase this winter away…

It kinda took me a while to publish some salsa news, but there are so many excuses for that. In my strong believe that late is still better than never I give you my review on Salsa flower Power now. 🙂 That Saturday was a total success. I didn’t attend classes (shame on me!) but I did hear they rose to all expectations. I did attend the party, however, and enjoyed like it was my first – in a good way that is. The new venue, Klub Cankarjevega doma, is just fabulous. The terrace and it’s view, the floor and ambient, everything meets the criteria of ‘What is top salsa place’. I was pleased to see so many foreign salseros, glad that they have finally figured out, that we do have good salsa in Ljubljana 😉 The party ended after 3 a.m. and continued in Tango bar on an after party. That one wasn’t empty either!
Every good salsa party needs show program and Salsa Flower Power introduced four great shows: Anke&Gil, Dado&Conny, Latina Bianca from Belgrade and a group of BU-BA students with their ever first performance. I think it’s only fair we give them a special place in this review. Congratulations to all! 🙂 🙂
